Speakers: Judy Murray, Aureola Tong, Clare Carpenter
We are delighted to say that our Spring 2025 workshop was held on Friday 28 March 2025 at Insole Court, Cardiff CF5 2LN.
This was an unusual workshop as we had three speakers. The first was our own MedNet member Judy Murray, a retired Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic (T+O) Surgeon whose interest in trauma shifted to paediatrics and knee surgery. Not only did Judy have a distinguished career in
orthopaedics, but she is also a linguist with a BA and MA in Translation Studies (German and Spanish) from Cardiff University. Currently, she is on an ESRC doctoral pathway studying MSc Social Studies Research Methods at Cardiff University and is planning to research healthcare interpreting in Wales. Judy works as a volunteer translator for several charities and is studying intermediate Welsh.
Aureola Tong is a graduate of Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’ School of Medicine. She completed junior training in London, Oxford and Swindon before starting her registrar training on the Wales rotation in 2007. After a decade of training (and three kids later), a MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering, and then full-time fellowships in Paediatric Orthopaedics (Cardiff) and Foot and Ankle Surgery (Bristol), she joined the Royal Glamorgan Hospital as a Consultant in 2020. She organised the specialist trainee Foot and Ankle block for the Wales rotation in 2003 and was Trainer of the Year for the orthopaedic specialist training programme in 2024.
The final speaker was Clare Carpenter is also a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon who originally trained at the University of Wales College of Medicine, UK. Her remarkable work in Cardiff as a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon was filmed in a recent BBC documentary that is available on BBC iPlayer. In addition to the UK, Clare has worked in various other countries including Australia, Papua New Guinea and India (where among her patients were children affected by the sequelae of poliomyelitis).
As usual, the day consisted of presentations followed by language workshop groups which focused on terminology and translation of pre-selected journal articles, with the opportunity to ask the speakers any questions.
